DESCRIPTION:There is no better way to experience the continuous\, dramatic shifts and spirit in twentieth century American life than to delve into its popular music. To that end\, pianist/singer/narrator Fred Miller has been presenting his extensive series of Lectures-In-Song for nearly a decade. Each of the 60+ different Lectures examines through anecdote and song some personality or important aspect of America´s Golden Age of Popular Song. Fred´s original series of 6 Lectures-In-Song: Popular Song As American History moves from era to era beginning with the late 19th century thru both World Wars and beyond\, ending on the time line at that abrupt\, pivotal moment [really just a few months] when the President was assassinated and the Beatles arrived [1963-1964]. There is one final 7th program\, a postscript to this series\, showcasing the musical high points on the American scene from 1965 on. Although it would be impossible not to mention Gershwin\, Porter\, Berlin\, Rodgers\, Mercer and the dozens of other giants covered in previous Lectures-In-Song\, this series focuses almost entirely on songs\, songwriters\, performers and personalities not mentioned previously. 1892-1919: “How Ya Gonna Keep ´Em Down On The Farm?” Immigration\, World War And The New Music 1920-1929: “Happy Days Are Here Again!” The Jazz Age And The Birth Of Radio 1930-1937: “Who´s Afraid Of The Big Bad Wolf?” Hollywood And The Great Depression 1938-1945: “Sentimental Journey” WWII And The Big Bands 1946-1956: “Music! Music! Music!” Postwar Prosperity And The Rise Of Rock 1957-1964: “Try To Remember” Finale: The Youth Culture Takes Over 1965-1988: “How Do You Keep The Music Playing?” Postscript: Social Upheaval And The British Invasion. In all seven installments of Popular Song As American History\, Miller points out various historical items of popular culture\, lingo\, new inventions\, crazes\, commercial products and most importantly\, the popular songs of each distinct American era. America has never been the same since 1964\, and neither has her popular music. Our country´s history and her music apparently move in tandem.

This is a favorite for all members\, but especially for the children/grandchildren \nNew Jersey law requires children 12 and younger to wear a US Coast Guard-approved life jacket or life vest while on an underway vessel. The life vest should also be in good condition and fit the child properly. \nPer the GSYC rule\, no child under 10 is permitted on the dock without a life jacket on.

DESCRIPTION:We have been granted a unique opportunity to receive a free boat safety inspection. Larry from the US Coast Guard Auxiliary and a colleague will conduct a multi-point safety inspection to ensure all the correct safety equipment is on board. Each boat inspection takes between 10-15 minutes. \nPlease note that no penalty or action will be taken if your boat is not compliant. This inspection serves as an advisory to help you understand what needs to be done for your boat’s safety. \nWe are targeting these inspections for next Sunday\, June 22nd\, and will schedule them consecutively. If you are interested\, please email VC David Klein to schedule a time.

DESCRIPTION:The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World: from French birth to American Icon \nNo image or symbol in the United States has permeated every aspect of American life as has the Statue of Liberty\, created by sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. \nConceived in the 1870s in Paris and created over two decades\, the Statue was erected in New York City harbor and inaugurated on October 28\, 1886. \nIts formal construction history is well known and documented\, but its less-known parallel subsequent social and international history is part of the American psyche. \nHer image has lent itself to all causes: right or left\, peace or war\, Democrat or Republican\, native or immigrant. From the irreverent to the extraordinary\, this illustrated talk will give new meaning to the old gal. \nShe championed women’s rights\, and from her earliest days in the 1880s\, she became known as a mother to all immigrants who viewed her from the deck of an arriving ship in New York Harbor. \nJeffrey Eger was a historical researcher and writer for the Statue of Liberty Museum in 1984-85. His Statue of Liberty collection of objects\, paper documents\, and ephemera is one of the largest and most comprehensive in the United States. It has been featured in many museum exhibitions and more than 200 international magazines and newspapers in 1986 celebration of the Statue’s Centennial. \nThis illustrated talk was conceived and photographed from Eger’s collection. It is an old fashioned slide show with new fashioned observations. \nCelebrate the Fourth in style.

DESCRIPTION:They say the club is a smorgasbord of events and activities you can participate in\, and everyone has their preferences. \nWell\, we will expand the options this year and add a spring fling\, a shorter Road Rally type event. However\, I need your responses and participation to make this work! Marcy and I have found an exceptional experience and tour almost in our backyard! This would be an early event [including tastings] as we will finish with lunch at around noon. The event and tour come to $30 per person. And I need commitments and deposits by next Friday; otherwise\, if we don’t have enough people COMMITED\, I will have to postpone this until next year. \nFRIDAY\, June 20th\, leaving the club at 9:00 a.m. \nI’ll be sure to follow specific details. However\, it is rain or shine\, it requires walking around a grass area for over an hour. \nLet’s make this happen!
